The Fal Estuary Loop: 18 Miles, Three Sketching Stops

This is one of my regular routes and it earns its place on the list every time. The Fal estuary is endlessly paintable — different light, different tide, different mood on every ride.

The route

Starting from Penryn, heading south through Mylor Bridge, picking up the lane towards Mylor Harbour, continuing to Flushing (worth a stop — the view back across to Falmouth is excellent), then looping back via Penryn Creek. Approximately 18 miles with 800ft of climbing, most of it manageable.

The sketching stops

Stop 1: Mylor Harbour — boats, rigging, low light in the morning. Best before 10am.

Stop 2: Flushing waterfront — the Georgian houses reflected in the water when the tide is high. 20 minute sketch minimum.

Stop 3: Penryn Creek — industrial history meets tidal creek. The old warehouses make excellent compositional anchors.
